Event Report: Costura Filipina Germany at the Orangerie, Darmstadt

Group Photo by Elaine Escobar, thank you for lending us this image.

Set in the beautiful Orangerie in Darmstadt during Germany’s autumn season, Costura Filipina Germany highlighted Filipino culture through stunning fashion, music, and dance. The organizers, from Germany, Maria and Michael Renker in cooperation with Gil Albarracin of Madrid, brought together an unforgettable event, inspired by their Ilonggo heritage and especially by designer Hector Gellangarin, who showcased his wonderful couture pieces crafted from a variety of local textiles highlighting the Hablon cloth.

The Hablon fabric, an intricate handwoven textile from the Western Visayas region of the Philippines, was the highlight of Gellangarin’s collection. Derived from the Hiligaynon word “habol,” meaning “to weave,” Hablon carries the rich heritage and craftsmanship of the Ilonggo people, blending fibers such as cotton, jusi (banana fiber), and piña (pineapple fiber). The vibrant textures and patterns of the fabric were masterfully incorporated into each design, allowing audiences to see not only the beauty of the textile but also its cultural significance. The Hablon pieces were a celebration of Filipino craftsmanship, with their intricate patterns and textures emphasizing both elegance and resilience—a tribute to the heritage of the artisans who weave this fabric by hand.

Complementing the Hablon collection was an elegant evening wear line in black and white, which exuded sophistication and timelessness. These monochromatic pieces offered a contemporary twist, with clean lines and modern silhouettes that contrasted beautifully with the intricate patterns of the Hablon. This black-and-white collection showcased Gellangarin’s versatility as a designer, balancing tradition with modern elegance, and captivated the audience with its sleek, minimalist aesthetic.

Beyond the fashion, the event provided a holistic cultural experience. With ballet performances, a soprano soloist, and live music from flutists and pianists, the Renkers aimed to create an immersive showcase of Filipino artistry. Behind the scenes, every detail was thoughtfully arranged—from the talented chefs who presented Filipino-inspired finger foods to the makeup artists, decorators, and program coordinators who worked to bring the event to life.

Maria and Michael ensured each contributor and participant felt valued, creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere even after the show. Guests left not only with a deeper appreciation for Filipino heritage but also new friendships and connections, inspired by the remarkable designs of Hector Gellangarin and the collaborative spirit of Costura Filipina Germany. This event, beautifully set against the backdrop of the Orangerie’s golden autumn landscape, was a memorable celebration of culture, artistry, and community.
