Hazel Amistoso’s entrepreneurial journey is one of resilience and passion. In the Philippines, she owned a thrift store in Angeles City, Pampanga. After moving to the Netherlands, she opened a nail salon studio. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to close its doors.
Undeterred by these setbacks, Hazel embraced the opportunity to pursue her true passion: cooking. Thus, Hazel’s Cusina was born.
Motivated by her love for cooking and hospitality, Hazel sought to create memorable dining experiences for various events. She aimed to introduce Filipino cuisine to the Dutch community. The name “Hazel’s Cusina,” translating to “Hazel’s Kitchen,” reflects her commitment to home-cooked meals crafted with care. Hazel, alongside her daughter and partner Trixie Ann Medalla, ventured beyond creating authentic dishes.
They valued innovation and creativity, often stepping outside traditional recipes. By blending Western and Filipino cuisines, they crafted dishes that offer a familiar taste while celebrating the art of fusion and mixology. This approach not only broadened their culinary repertoire but also made their company more inclusive. Ultimately, Hazel’s Cusina believes in the power of food to celebrate, unite, and create lasting memories.
Through their culinary creations, they aim to bring people together and share the rich tapestry of Filipino culture with the world. What is your message to Filipinos who wants to start their own catering business?
“The Catering industry is a place where you can foster creativity. From the art of culinary to the principles of gastronomy. If you have passion for cooking, follow your heart and turn it into business. The technicalities of this industry requires understanding of the market. Knowing your customer needs, performance of your competitors and the industry needs. The business landscape is constantly evolving so investing your time in continuous learning is very essential. This way you will be able to survive in the competitive world of business.” (Hazel Amistoso)
